OCI card validity

Last Update: March 21, 2025

The OCI card is a permanent visa for individuals of Indian origin who hold foreign citizenship. It grants Indian ancestry foreign nationals the freedom to reside, work, and travel in India freely without a need for a separate visa. But though the OCI card does not expire, the card validity is tied with the passport of the holder, and there are some rules to be adhered to in order to maintain it updated and valid.

Important Points on OCI Card Validity:

Lifelong Visa for India:

  • The OCI card is a multiple entry, lifetime visa for India. You don't require a visa to visit India if you have a valid OCI card.

Passport and OCI Card Link:

  • Although the OCI card is lifetime, it has to be invariably linked with a valid foreign passport.
  • Whenever a new passport is received (on account of age, renewal, or damage), OCI cardholders are required to update their passport information with Indian authorities.

Compulsory OCI Card Re-issue/Updation:

  • For under 20 years: OCI needs to be updated whenever a new passport is obtained.
  • For 21 to 49 years: No requirement for updation of OCI when new passport is obtained.
  • For persons aged 50 years and older: OCI must be renewed once after a new passport has been issued after the age of 50.

OCI Card and Passport to Be Carried Together:

  • While going to India, both OCI card and the current foreign passport should be carried together to prevent any problem at immigration.

Why Timely Updates Are Important:

  • Not updating OCI details (such as new passport number) can result in refusal of entry or exit from India and may result in legal issues.

Updating Procedure:

  • You can update your OCI card details online on the official OCI portal or Indian Mission/Consulate website in your country.
